When you give, you should absolutely expect a return! It’s a promise in God’s Word (Luke 6:38; Malachi 3:10, Mark 4:20, 2 Corinthians 9:6). So, if you are a giver, you’re already on the right path to prosperity. But if something is blocking your way, you can take steps to clear the path to your blessing. Begin by considering some of the common roadblocks to receiving.
1. Are you tithing?
Giving and tithing are two different things. Giving is bringing an offering that is beyond the tithe, not instead of the tithe. We absolutely receive a harvest when we sow a gift into the kingdom (Luke 6:38), but tithing is the first order of business in God’s system of wealth. The tithe is our first and best seed. We tithe as an act of worship to God, showing our gratitude for His provision in every area of our lives. In addition to your giving, be sure you are tithing, which is 10% of your gross income.
2. Are you walking in love?
Strife and unforgiveness are major blessing blockers, so if you’re not seeing prosperity in every area of your life, this is definitely a place you want to look. Holding a grudge is never worth sacrificing your blessings! If nothing comes to mind, ask God to reveal anything you aren’t thinking about. Then also take a peek at 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 and review what the love walk looks like. There is never a time when any of us doesn’t have at least one of these traits that needs work. Purpose in your heart to walk in love toward your spouse, children, friends, neighbors and, yes, especially your enemies.
3. Are you watching your words?
Mark 11:23 tells us we’ll have whatever we say. The problem is a lot of Christians are in the habit of saying what they have! Faith doesn’t say just anything. When bills stack up, faith doesn’t say, “I don’t have the money!” Faith says, “My God supplies all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all I can ask or think!” To receive, you’ve got to speak like a receiver! Expect to be blessed, expect overflow and abundance, and expect the favor of God. Then talk like you’re expecting it! Speak God’s Word over your finances. When you do, you’re releasing spiritual power and the Word of God, which NEVER returns void.
4. Are you actively receiving?
Possession is key in the Bible. Israel had to take possession of the land God promised them. He gave it to them and it belonged to them, but they had to take possession to receive the land. It’s the same when it comes to provision. Jesus paid a high price to give you everything included in THE BLESSING. Now, you need to go possess it. Believe God’s promises, speak them and praise Him that you’ve received them (before you see them!). That is what a receiver looks like!
